THE OCTOBER VISIT

Let’s play, says Casper.

I watched them walking through the gates,

None of them looked pleased.

A look of discomfort filled their eyes.

They were not at all at ease.

 ()()()

“I really don’t like being here,”

Was something that was said.

I wonder just what they expected.

After all, everyone here is dead.

 ()()()

 A graveyard in October?

Especially at dusk?

That’s when the spirits come out to play.

This time of year? That’s a must!!

 ()()()

“Let’s make this quick”, the woman replied

While looking all around.

“This place gives me goosebumps”,

He replied while looking at the ground.

 ()()()

“Did you hear that?” the woman asked

As she grabbed her husband’s arm.

He walked a little faster to avoid

Encountering any harm.

 ()()()

 Soon the whispers started

And I didn’t hesitate

To join in the deadly murmurings

Asking what would now be their fate?

 ()()()

On impulse, I let out a moan

As loud and as clear could be.

Others joined in with echoing groans.

One yelled, “Oh, woe, oh woe is me!”

 ()()()

 As the couple’s bodies trembled,

They stopped and looked around.

“There she is,” he whispered

As he looked at the name he found.

 ()()()

They placed the flowers on the grave,

But didn’t shed a tear.

With trembling voice, she quickly stood

And said, “Let’s get out of here.”

 ()()()

 They didn’t waste a moment

As they hurried through the gates,

But made me wonder once again,

What important task awaits.

 ()()()

I stood before the silent grave

To see just why they came.

I kneeled and touched the dying petals

As I stared at my own name.
