The Night The Road Dropped

And Reality Tilted

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished about a year ago 1 min read
Noir Art

we stood in the doorway

and listened to the sounds

of a far away place

and heard footsteps on the ground

in the distance, a flicker

just out over the ridge

and a soft, whispered snicker

coming from under the bridge

we snuck out to follow

to see what we'd see

there was a dark colored shadow

on the edge of the trees

as we began to approach it

it smiled from under the gate

too driven to quit

though it sensed, we were afraid

the moonlight framed it's figure

it's eyes, glowed like the stars

it was bent and disfigured

it's body covered in scars

it stood to address us

and somehow, it knew our names

through a thick cloud of dust

appeared a posse with chains

it wrapped them around our bodies

and drug us into the night

until we'd been embodied

and filled with a terrible fright

when we woke, we were naked

in the doorway, we once stood

the image was faded

like a message we'd misunderstood

we made a pact to forget it

and never say what we saw

but if I were to admit

it's coming back for us all
