THE NIGHT THE ALIENS TOOK ME

A spaceship beamed a silver light
And landed in the snow,
Then little creatures wandered out
From where, I didn’t know.

They spoke in some strange language
That no one could understand,
So I walked rather boldly up,
Said, “Hi,” and held out my hand.

Well, that was my first mistake,
For before I could even shout,
They froze me stiff, picked me up,
And carried me straight out.

They took me to their spaceship
And whisked me through the sky,
Past the clouds and past the moon,
And I kept asking, “Why?”

They tested me and prodded me,
They poked around my brain,
And the thought of never going home
Was driving me insane.

“Oh please,” I begged, “just take me back,
You’ve made a big mistake.
There are far more clever people
You could very easily take.

“I live at number twenty,
But try number eighty-three,
There are professors living there—
Much more intelligent than me.

“They’ve got science coming out their toes,
They know things I’ll never know.
Me? I’m just an ordinary woman
With asthma and a runny nose!”

They made a funny clicking noise
And started to converse,
And I couldn’t tell if what I’d said
Had made things better or worse.

Then something sharp went in my arm,
The whole ship started to sway,
My eyes grew heavy, everything blurred,
And darkness took me away.

I woke up in my own bed
With a sore spot on my arm,
And thought perhaps I’d dreamed it all—
There surely was no harm.

Until I heard the town that day
Talking about eighty-three.
The scientist had gone outside
To investigate what he could see.

A strange light hovered near his home,
Then vanished from the sky,
And nobody had seen him since—
And suddenly I knew why.

So now I know it wasn’t a dream,
Something really took me high,
But I’m not opening my mouth about it—
And I’ll tell you exactly why.

I’ll sit here quiet, I’ll say nowt,
And keep well out of sight,
Because if they’ve taken him up there…
They might bring him back tonight.
