THE NIGHT THAT FOUND ME

It was late one night and I was sitting with my pen
Thinking about the things in life that come back now and then
The moon was shining brightly and the house was standing still
I had that funny feeling that something was coming still

I looked towards the window and I heard a little sound
Three knocks upon the glass and then silence all around
I said well this is bloody strange and looked around the room
Then saw a black rose sitting there beneath the silver moon

I picked it up and wondered where the bloody thing had come
I hadn’t put it there myself so where had it come from
There was a little note tied around the stem so tight
It said remember me tonight before you say goodnight

I read those words again and then I felt a funny chill
A memory came rushing back that I had buried still
I saw a little girl laughing beside a garden gate
And somehow in my heart I knew I’d found something too late

I knew that old house somewhere although I’d never been
I’d seen it in my dreams before with roses growing in
I followed where the memory went and found the house one day
I stood beside the old front door and didn’t know what to say

I opened up the wooden door and walked into the hall
There were pictures on the walls that seemed to tell it all
Then I saw the little girl and suddenly I knew
She was someone from my past and she’d been waiting too

Her name came back so clearly then and tears fell from my eyes
She was my sister all along beneath those old disguise
We’d lost so many years but love had never gone away
And standing there beside her felt like yesterday

I took that black rose home with me and placed it by my pen
I thought about the things we lose and somehow find again
Now when the night comes knocking I don’t worry anymore
Some memories come back to us to open up a door
