THE NIGHT OF THE THUNDERSTORM

The thunder woke me up.
It shook the window glass.
I pulled the covers close.
And prayed the storm would pass.

The lightning filled the room.
It flashed across my wall.
I feared the house was hit.
Each time I saw it fall.

My husband was away.
I wished that he was home.
I hated being there.
So frightened and alone.

I thought about some tea.
To settle down my fright.
But getting down the stairs.
Was not for me that night.

What if the power went?
And left me in the black.
I knew if that occurred.
I would have heart attack.

I buried down my head.
Beneath my biggest sheet.
I left a breathing hole.
And curled up both my feet.

Another mighty crash.
Went roaring through the sky.
I whispered to myself.
Tonight I think I die.

Then something hit my bed.
And landed near my feet.
I nearly left my skin.
And tangled in the sheet.

I thought someone was there.
Perhaps beneath my bed.
I pictured every way.
That I could end up dead.

I heard a little sound.
Then something touched my leg.
I thought, please go away.
I nearly had to beg.

And then I heard a woof.
Come somewhere near my knee.
My silly frightened dog.
Was terrified like me.

He pushed beneath my sheet.
And found my breathing hole.
He cuddled by my side.
The frightened little soul.

We listened to the storm.
And jumped at every sound.
Each time the thunder cracked.
We nearly left the ground.

We stayed beneath that sheet.
Two cowards in the night.
He shook against my legs.
I held onto him tight.

At last the thunder moved.
The lightning disappeared.
The silence filled the house.
The morning slowly neared.

The daylight reached my room.
My dog looked up at me.
We made it through the night.
As brave as we could be.
