The Narcissist

Poem about self-reflection and desire for love.

I think I am a narcissist,

I have all I'd wish to know,

I have love, and I have joy,

And still the wanting grows.

...

Praise dangles sweet from fingertips,

I bite their knuckles red,

Grin up at them with bloodstained teeth,

Laugh. "Is that all I get?"

...

Love waits patient by my bedside,

Full of smiles and kind brown eyes,

But I snap and snarl and demand it come closer,

Till Love threatens to leave out of spite.

...

My self-obsession preens and twirls around,

It hides in the jokes that I sneer.

I swagger and banter and grin like a character,

Till eyes roll, and friends disappear.

...

Oh I feel a fucking feral thing,

It crawls inside of me,

Bless my hate and bless my heart,

Want cracks out of what I bleed.

...

There's gluttony too, this sinful beast,

More and more, it cries,

I mash it back into its cage,

But it whispers lies at night.

...

I think that I need everyone,

And everything, all of the time,

I was told that life should be shared with others,

But I've laughed and named it as mine.

...

I want a world, I want to be Earth,

I want to adorn the seas and the skies,

To be majesties so strange and breathtaking,

People have to stop and admire the sight.

...

My soul trembles, it begs and threatens,

My heart's a savage, selfish thing,

To all of the angels, up in Heaven,

Let it be MY praises you sing.

...

I suppose I need proof that I exist,

And there's a reason that I was put here,

Else you might realize my want hides my self-loathing,

And know I'm a narcissist only out of fear.

Praise can certainly balm the cuts of insecurity Healing our internal.wounds from the inside out is a serious skill. Looks to me like you uave a handle on it though. Very self aware poem.

In this introspective poem, the author takes us on a journey through the depths of their emotions, revealing the intricate dance between self-love and the yearning for external approval. As we read these verses, we can't help but empathize with the narrator's vulnerability and the raw honesty that pours from their words. The imagery painted in the lines is vivid, like an artist working with a palette of emotions. We can sense the internal battle and the unquenchable desire for more. It's a story of a soul grappling with the conflicting forces of self-obsession and the longing for genuine connection. Through this piece, we're reminded of the shared human experience - the struggles and desires that we all grapple with at some point in our lives. It serves as a testament to the complexity of our emotions and the need for understanding and empathy in our relationships. So, my friend, as you've shared this poetic journey with us, we too recognize the significance of being empathetic companions on this intricate path of life. It's a beautiful reminder of the value of genuine connections and the power of understanding in the face of our inner turmoil. 🌟

very insightful and thought-provoking. my only question is: how does one really now he/she is a narcissist? I've known people I could classify as narcissists, but they seem to be clueless.

    Absolutely heartbreakingly stunning

  • Wanting everything we will know only want. Wanting nothing we will want for nothing. These but two opposing poles within the infinities of the human condition. The self-awareness of your final line transcends all that is individuated.
