The Naming of What Remains

For Juno In The Library - A Mikeydred June 2026 Dollar Prompt

Brook in June, 1919, by Willard Metcalf

As June was in full bloom

The bridge between spring

And summer

Offers brighter skies

And warmer climes

We two sat

Companions

In life

Til death

Righting the wrongs

And writing them down

We looked over

The tufts of grass and reeds sprouting from the water's edge

A babbling brook

Always babbling

Never prostrating

But of course not

For how would said brook

Prostrate

And to whom

Would anyone imagine

It were possible

To gain the ear

On bended knee

Of the brook

That babbles

with life

Delegance

The language

Of elegance

But when

The adverbs

Adjectives

And verbage

Have dried up

Withered away

And meaning

Is ruptured

Can we still

Grant immortality

To the babbling brook

For is it merely

A babbling brook

Because we allow it

Or would it find

Existence

Elsewhere

If we were to

Pollute

Or dam it all.

Life may give out

Initially

But may continue

Still

Beyond where we sit

As the babbling brook
