What’s in a name?

Syllables s t r e t c h e d in hopes to calm the retch

forming in the back of my throat

whenever I try

to force fondness,

to subside, to hide,

may I

be reminded that this name—

one I view with shame—

was not my first choice.

no, that was back in ‘19

sacked with several others,

burrowed nominations I believed brought salvation.

(Davey, Michael, Levi, Connor,

you all haunt me more

than a lamb to slaughter)

I settled on one which

didn’t squeeze my lungs,

but still I flinch an inch

when it falls from others’ lips.
