The Mythical Animal World
Every tool at my disposal
The sun is setting off in the east,
Hues of orange, pink, purple and blues,
Time to sleep in the arms of a grizzly bear,
Safe from harm, cosy and warm, with the grandest of views.
***
As morning begins to lighten the horizon,
I stretch in sleepy relief,
I plan to run with the leader of the wolf pack,
A day of pleasure instilled by their chief.
***
As we come to the end of the run,
Buried hands through wolves soft silky fur,
I ready myself eagerly as I prepare to ride the stripes of a tiger,
Traversing the world in a blur.
***
Stalking through the rainforests undergrowth,
Hearing the flaming fluttering of powerful wings,
I’m hefted from the plant life, flying through the trees on the back of a phoenix,
In awe of the feelings of freedom this brings.
***
As we leave the trees behind us,
Soaring over the boundless body of water stretching below,
I’m suddenly falling until I am swimming through the ocean in a shark’s belly,
Racing to meet life head on, thrilled as we begin to slow.
***
Once more I’m scooped up and taken to great heights,
The view of the universe all around in every direction,
As I swoop through the clouds with the wings of an angel,
My heart beating in perfection.
***
Tumbling over and over, not sure on where I’ll land,
The feeling of pain, heat and torture,
I’m now roaming the underworld halls by the horns of my demons,
The walls, the air, the heat a real scorcher.
***
Not to my liking to any great degree,
I escape to the topside,
And race over the land in the shell of a turtle,
Knowing today’s the day of the bride.
***
A wedding of opportunity,
I need to find myself on higher ground,
Climbing a tree hanging onto the body of a snake,
All powerful muscle, onwards and upwards, without a sound.
***
When was the last time I fed my energy,
Every cell screaming for a taste,
Eating my meals with the mouth of a rhinoceros,
Not a morsel am I prepared to waste.
***
Time for some fun and adventure,
The highlight of this very day,
Surfing the river waves in the skin of a crocodile,
As we rise and fall in play.
***
Soaking wet, cold and looking for comfort,
A warm nesting of the softest of hair,
I bound over a mountain in the pouch of a kangaroo,
Similar to being in the arms of my bear.
***
The daylight is once more sinking,
As I ponder where I’ll sleep that night,
Swinging through the rainforest by the arms of a monkey,
Who’ll see that I’m tucked away in darkness, somewhere tucked in tight.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Your poem transported me to Jumanji world. I loved this line the most 'I’m suddenly falling until I am swimming through the ocean in a shark’s belly'!
This is magically terrific. Well done.
Absolutely love this…
