This poem might not seem all that scary at first … until we think about it and realize where the modern-day monster is hiding nowadays.
A time went by, when the monster cowered in the closet,
Before it ventured out and waited underneath the bed.
It only showed itself under cover of the shadows;
And while it waited, pages turned and seasons’ hues were shed.
Perhaps, in time, it quested, in search of ties or kindred,
For it was thought to have been seen in niches in the wood,
Beneath the damp decay of fallen trees, and in the caves,
And underneath the boulders that the ages have withstood.
And time found it in the city, reflected in the glass
Of monoliths that mock the sky and challenge nature’s way;
It lurked the alleys and the corners, crept along the stairs …
Wherever there was darkness, it made there a place to stay.
And time went by, and the monster awoke in the new place,
Where the darkness glows in the heart of the buzzing machine.
And there it opened many doors. And many people see
But do not notice, looking back, the eyes behind the screen.
