The Monkey Who Became My Best Friend

Monkey laugh and monkey sing,
Monkey do most anything.

At a circus one fine day,
A man was giving his monkey away.

He said, “This monkey is unfit for work,
So I’m giving away this little jerk.

He’s mischievous and he’s naughty,
He just doesn’t care.”

And I immediately thought,
“He’s going nowhere!”

I said, “How much do you want?”
He said, “Take him for free.
Just get him the hell away from me!”

So I took monkey home,
And he looked a bit scared.

And I whispered so gently,
And he tilted his head,
And he heard.

Me and the monkey became the best pals.

I bought him a little cage
To keep him in at night,
Or else he would have tipped
The house upside down.

But he didn’t mind going in it,
Just at night,
Even though he looked so sad
With a frown.

Me and that monkey
Were friends for many years,
And when he died,
I shed buckets of tears.

I’ll never forget that little pet
That was given away
With no regret.

But I came off the best, you see,
Because my best friend adored me.

I adored him
As much as he adored me.
