The Mirror

Not a poem, but a story...

The Mirror

I have just woken to the world,

Something has been brought to my notice

It's reflective, it's shiny, oh what do I see?

I know it is not mine, but I must take a peek

I know the owner, oh! the owner loves me

"You are Gray", the mirror says to me

"Devoid of character and feelings indeed

Enjoy this bliss and take what you need

because once you stop looking, and begin to know better

then this image of you might begin to shatter"

Gray I am, Gray! I believed

I have since began to walk and school is to start

Across the hallway, in the hands of friends

I see another shiny mirror, a work of art

"You should be blue" the mirror says to me

"Look at your nose, how big could they be?

Your shoes are different, yet you traipse casually

You should be hidden, so no one can see"

Blue I am, Blue! I believed

I avoided their eyes, because I was hideous

I would be better if I did not exist

so I wore the outfits that only served to hide me

Another mirror out there, owned by the public

"You should be green" The mirror says to me

"The way that you dress, you show no gender

A girl should be this, and a boy should that

Yet there you are with a bit of this and that

You should be green, you are disgusting!"

Green I am, Green! I believed

I was not only ugly but now I am disgusting?

I walked with head low and tried to conform

Wore a flower to my head, walked with a girl's form

There's a mirror up ahead

I shouldnt be looking, but this one softly read:

"You should be red" the mirror said to me

"The things you think are bad, are flaming hot

You should walk like you own the world

you are smart, funny and so, you should be wroth

for all the unfair judgement and what not!"

Red it thinks, Red! I should be

This mirror lies, what does it want from me?

I cannot be red, I have seen red

I would look into another, for truths to be said

This mirror is big, and scary to me

It is not mine, but then again none of them is

Of all the mirrors, this one is of more influence

Put your best foot first they say, I even bought a new shoe

This mirror remains unimpressed, showing indifference

"You should be yellow" the mirror said to me

"You are not bad, but I've seen other fellows

You do not compare to them, never have never will

You are nothing, do not try!, stay still!!"

Yellow it thinks, Yellow! I believed

What was I doing thinking I was special?

I should be black I said to myself

I shouldn't be at all in existence,

so I absorb all their colors.

Now everyone has brought a lying mirror

"Hey buddy look up" "Hey, you are enough"

"You should be Orange, the world had brought you down

but like a sun you shine without sun down"

Liars! they are, I wish they would leave.

I hear a familiar mirror trying to reach

"Red! I said, Red you should be!"

"You are the best, no! you are hot flames

Just get up and let's go through this together

I promise you that all would get better"

I love the red mirror and it loves me too

With the red mirror, I am as happy as i can be

but with the red mirror, all other mirrors agree and speak:

"This is the lowest, the worst you can be

It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"

But I am not Adam and I am not Eve

What then do I do? What becomes of me?

"Listen to me" the red mirror says

Create your own mirror and see your own self

You were once black when you absorbed the colors

Now just be you, but reflect the colors

Be white, only white can reject the opinion

Red has taught me to build my own mirror

But I wouldn't be White without depth and simply rejecting the colors

I would wear my colors proudly and loudly

Beginning with my Red, I would put on every color

because every one of them are my battle scars

Reminding me of the things I had overcome
