“STRENGTH AND HONOR”

STRONG IS STRONG? ENOUGH FOR MAN COULD IT BE?

His house whose lights work in every room but one. From the street he looks lived‑in, tidy, curtains trained to fall just so. The lawn clipped down to regulation silence.

Only he knows about the locked door at the end of the hallway, where the handle turns but never opens, where something hums behind the wall like a trapped storm rehearsing its lines.

Inside, he is a country at a quiet war. The general in his chest orders silence on every front:

“No panic. No softness. We will not be seen bleeding.” But somewhere in the same body, there is a field medic with empty hands, no bandages for the thoughts that leak, no language for the ache that doesn’t bruise.

Joy to him is a foreign city whose maps were never given to men like his father. He can see its skyline from the window, a place where laughter is not an apology, anger, or fear. Where saying “I’m not okay” is just another way of arriving home. When he tries to travel there, his safe place, the trains are cancelled, the bridge is always “under construction,” and the bus driver smiles and says, “Real Men Walk.”

Therapy sounds to him like learning to breathe underwater. He is not sure which is more frightening, the depth he might discover below, or the possibility that he could actually float. Hope feels dangerous, like stepping onto thin ice with people watching, knowing that cracking is a sound men are taught to not share, but endure inside.

When the house is quiet, and the war forgets to reload itself. He sits by the locked door at the end of the hallway, back pressed against the grain, and listens. The storm behind it is softer now, less like thunder, more like rain explaining itself.

He imagines that day, when he will hold the handle with both hands to open. The hinges loosen with each unsteady truth the storm translates into sentences, and somewhere inside that room an unfamiliar light keeps trying to learn his name.
