Is…?

No.

Where…?

I don’t respond.

With the first word, they imagine the answer.

Would you…

Are you…

They never finish

The cocktail hangs off the tip of my finger.

The questions hang

I let them linger

I give them the power to allow their minds to weave a tale.

It will impress them more than the truth I won’t share.

Do you want to talk...

I smile and take a sip.

My failure to satisfy their lust for my life fills the space between us.

How…

I don't mean to pry…

Can I ask...

My heart is mine.

My story a novella I don’t allow them to read.

My head tilts back. The cocktail with it.

Empty.

Our time is done.

I move away.
