The Lust Between Us

An acrostic poem

Daylight bleeds

In through satin curtains, and the

Saturnalia of our fairytale last night

Transcends this harrowed space (in which my)

Restive heartbeats still.

All the lust between us (now a vapor...)

Clouds that dissipate into the

Tapered framework of your chalky windowsill.

I think I've fallen deeply, an

Odalisque I am to this

Niaiserie; to a Rome that can't be built (within the) single breath of midnight thrills--all the lust between us (now a vapor as) my restive heartbeats still.

Author's Note: I feel like I may have pigeonholed myself into accurately classifying all of my poems now. 😅

This one is a mix of my Signature and Petite lines because - while short - it carries more of the typical rhyme and flow pattern of my Signature collection. I also relied a bit heavily on the use of embellishments (bolding, underlining, and italics) to ensure the rhythm carried the way I wanted it to (which is something I've been trying to do less of within the Petite line.) Therefore, I am now creating a third line:

Signature Mini 😅 (I'm kind of laughing at myself with all this, and it's ok if you do, too! ☺️)

Anyway, here are the definitions of some of the keywords in here, which have been borrowed from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary and Wiktionary:

niaiserie noun

njɛz.ʁi (niais +‎ -erie)

foolish talk or behavior

odalisque noun

ō-də-ˌlisk

an enslaved woman

saturnalia noun

sa-tər-ˈnāl-yə

an unrestrained, often licentious celebration

Your diction is always a lesson for me, which I love. I love words and learning more of them, so I appreciate your glossaries. This is gorgeous. The verses are musical and serene. I want to go back to it. Congratulations on TS!

This one literally made me shiver as I read it. Wow. Sorceress. I love that, recently, I am getting two-pieces-in-one with your Author's Note / "below section". It's just as enjoyable to read as the "above section" lol Congrats on TS and outstanding creation, Gina :)

Beautifully written! Really loved the definitions you provided at the end too haha - I was curious as to what those words meant.

  • Ah okay, now I see where my confusion came from. I should have read this before the Maestranza poem 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ So this is the Origin story of your Signature Mini. I loved the word Odalisque. Your poem was as beautiful as always!

Amazing, Gina! The way you paint with emotion is truly an art form. I love any label you put on these, it’s a gift to read your work!

  • Some wonderful words to get lost in, Another beauty

  • That ofttimes hollow feeling we have the morning after, as we remember the wonders of the past evening's trysts in the light & emptiness of day.

Beautiful expressions Gina! The only thing to magnify this would have been a sound track, though I think I heard one. The impressed empress resting content! 🥰

  • Excellent flow. And I love the explanations at the end too!

One of my favorite things about reading your work is the distraction of looking up a definition or two. I'd already done so before I read your notes after the poem. lol

I love any name you choose to describe these lovely pieces!! My inner word nerd is so satisfied with this one. Beautiful imagery created with just a few short lines. Loved it!!
