THE LITTLE BLUEBIRD’S FINAL FLIGHT

Time goes by never to be returned

THE LITTLE BLUEBIRD’S FINAL FLIGHT

A little bluebird flew across
A bright and sunny sky,
He looked upon the world below
And softly wondered why.
Why does life go by so quickly?
Why must everything grow old?
Why does the warmth of yesterday
Become a memory cold?

He remembered being little,
In a nest high in a tree,
His mother sang him lullabies
As happy as could be.
She taught him how to spread his wings,
To venture out alone,
But always whispered lovingly,
“You’ll always have a home.”

One morning she sat quietly
Upon the neighbour’s fence,
Her little wings were trembling,
Her breathing had grown tense.
She whispered, “Jesus calls me now,
My time has finally come,
Across the rainbow bridge I’ll fly,
Goodbye, my darling son.”

He begged his mum to stay with him,
He cried, “Please don’t go away,”
But heaven had already called,
And she could not delay.
And when her little heart grew still,
Beneath the morning sun,
A single feather, soft and blue,
Was all she left her son.

He carried that blue feather
Through the seasons of his life,
He found himself a loving home,
A beautiful little wife.
Together they raised children,
And taught them how to fly,
And watched them leave the family nest
To find their own blue sky.

But time, it has no mercy,
And years go rushing by,
The flowers bloom, the seasons change,
And even bluebirds die.
His lovely wife grew tired one day,
Her wings could fly no more,
And once again he felt the pain
Of losing one adored.

His children had their families,
Their lives were far away,
And no one came to visit him
Or ask if he was okay.
He sat upon his lonely branch,
Where once he’d sung with pride,
And thought about the ones he’d loved
Who’d left him when they died.

He took his mother’s feather out,
And held it to his breast,
He whispered, “Mum, I’ve tried so hard,
But now I need my rest.
I’ve lived my life, I’ve loved and lost,
I’ve watched my children fly,
And now I’m just a little bird
Who’s waiting here to die.”

Then suddenly the clouds rolled back,
A song came floating through,
A voice he hadn’t heard for years
Said, “Son, I’ve waited for you.
Come home, my little bluebird,
You’ve been away so long,
There’s nothing left to fear now,
Just follow mother’s song.”

And so he spread his tired wings,
No longer young or strong,
And flew towards that gentle voice
That he’d remembered all along.
And there beyond the rainbow bridge,
Where love will never end,
His mother stood beside his wife,
And welcomed him again.

And in the nest he left behind,
Where once he’d laughed and grown,
A little feather floated down
Upon the twigs alone.
The sun still shone, the flowers bloomed,
The world went rushing by,
But three bluebirds were flying free
Beyond the endless sky.

And love remained where feathers fell,
Though no one heard their song,
For those we love are never lost,
They’ve simply flown along.
