In the heart of the Sahyadri hills,

Where mist and valor intertwine,

Stands a warrior, fierce and free,

Chhatrapati Shivaji, a name divine.

Born to Jijabai's unwavering love,

Destined for greatness from the start,

He carved his path through strife and blood,

A lion-hearted ruler with a lion's heart.

Raigad, Pratapgad, Sinhagad—

Forts that echoed with his battle cries,

Against the Mughals, the waves of tyranny,

Shivaji stood tall, the sun in his eyes.

Swaraj—his dream, his unwavering goal,

Not just for himself, but for every soul,

He championed justice, dharma, and might,

Guided by the stars, he fought the fight.

His legacy echoes through the ages,

In the courage of warriors, the songs they sing,

From the Konkan shores to the Deccan plains,

Shivaji's spirit soars on freedom's wing.

Today, as the saffron flag flutters high,

And the winds whisper tales of yore,

Remember the lion who roared for liberty,

Chhatrapati Shivaji—the forevermore

Jai Bhavani! Jai Shivaji!

Inspired by the valor and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Yesterday afternoon I offered my empty grocery cart to an Indian couple, both in American clothes but the spot of red was on her forehead. They were handsome and in their sixties, most likely. I bowed, said Namaste, and they responded with surprise and delight. I am a Taoist, a Christian-Taoist, I said as a way of offering explanation here in the land of born-agains and Trump supporters. I was not wearing my Rudraksha beads. I rarely wear them outside the house. But I am in prayer much of the day. The light of God within me salutes the light of God within you, fellow writer! :)
