The Last Wish
There is a place beyond all sleep
Where people go their truths to keep
No roads lead there, no lantern glows
Yet somehow every spirit knows
A hall of candles tall and wide
With endless flickering gold inside
Each flame belonging to a life
Its joy, its wonder and its strife
At the far end sat someone still
Not king nor queen nor force nor will
Just watching softly as time passed
As though all moments never last
They asked no name and gave no test
Only one question like the rest
If nothing held you back at all
What would you choose before the fall
I thought of riches, thought of fame
Thought of success beside my name
Yet none felt honest standing there
None felt like something I would wear
So then I looked much deeper in
Past every loss and where I’d been
Past all the waiting and disguise
And finally answered with clear eyes
I wish to live before life goes
To stop postponing what I know
To trust the joy that visits me
And build the things I want to see
To speak more truth and fear less shame
To stop making small my own name
To walk through doors though unsure still
And trust the strength inside my will
The keeper smiled and stood nearby
No stars appeared across the sky
No magic changed the world around
No hidden treasure there was found
Only these words before I woke
Your life begins where fear is broke
Morning arrived in gentle light
The room looked ordinary bright
Yet something quiet had begun
Like opening curtains to the sun
Now when I hesitate too long
Or tell myself I do not belong
I think of candles burning through
And choose again what feels most true
