I used to spend my summers there

On one of the benches on the lakeshore

The summer air hot and humid

Made bearable by the breeze

Floating fiercely off of the water

I’d sit for hours

Just me and my thoughts

Watching the boats cruise past

The waves they caused

Echoing across the water’s surface

Each boat a different story

The old married couple here on vacation

With their million-dollar cabin

Resting right on the shore

Or the families there for the day

The Moms frantically trying to

keep their toddler away from the boats edge

and of course the fishing boats

barely moving

in hopes of not disturbing their prey

I watched them all

Giving them all new lives in my head

Wondering if anyone has ever watched me

And imagined I had some life

Far more interesting than my own
