THE LADY IN GREEN-an irony

5/7/26

INTRO: (I don't recall how I was inspired to write this

but I know I read a lot of politics and the evil

that I see-intentional and unintentional-is quite

discomfiting and heartbreaking. The bigotry and hate

and the justifications America has relied on

through its entire history has strong roots-like

a bad habit-so hard to break that one just gives

in to that evil and sees it as normal.)

--------------------------------------------------------

She stands by the door

A light held high in her right hand

Knowing many are looking where to land

..The Lady In Green

draped in her clothing so serene

She stands tall

Proud and hopeful

Though having lost countless children

to years

..to time

...to wars

....to estrangement..

She beckons and promises

To orphans and those afar

Looking for safe havens and harbors,

For hope,

For life..and

The Lady In Green,

She beckons..

Standing on promises of Fathers' past.

I hear Mazzy's soft hush as she sings behind me.

"Isn't it strange you never knew"

But now..

The Lady In Green's children that had forgotten her..

Come to claim a promise made of welcome mats

And open doors

Claim the promise is not for you..

Besides, the house is full

Can't hold no more.

The Lady In Green stands silent

Swathed in a wail unheard at the betrayal of hers,

Wondering if her birth in fire and pain

Had all been in vain.

While the Hopi..

Navajo..

Seminole..

Blackfeet,

All the Native peoples

Of this Lady In Green's land

Kept it safe in hand

Before she came

with her children

To claim their land.
