Ode to NYC

Brooklyn, 2018. All photos by Jenny Samuel.

Brooklyn, 2018, heat and flash of steel

Sun-kissed subway platform, head to midtown

Get on at Halsey, whirring threads of teal

Trains race in the dark tunnels underground

Myrtle-Wyckoff, Jefferson, Morgan, Graham

I want beauty, shade, good food, wine and art

Get off at Union Square in lower Manhattan

I can feel the trains beneath like the beat of my heart.

Union square market: fruits, art and flowers

Down Broadway, flip through books at the Strand

Under a tree’s shade I passed leisure hours

A-train to Fort Tryon, notebook in hand

Broadway junction, the silver turnstiles spin

Brooklyn to Manhattan to Harlem and back again

Dog walker in Washington Square park (he posed for me), Manhattan, 2018.

Guitar player, Manhattan, 2018

Pigeon man in Washington square park
