The Kids are Alright .

poetry reminiscing on childhood friendships

By purging purgatoryPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read

we’ve cried

writhed

seethed

and tried to hide behind masks and blankets alike

from the new demons that leer

meticulously deconstructing our spirit through jeer

comfortably residing in the cranium’s inner reaches to dine

these animations derived of fear

commanding the control as we just barely learn to steer

serve only to keep us in line

by making faces of anxiety and depression appear

in our pokédex of being , the thefts of cheer-

we’re left with lingering energies entwined-

incredulous and uncomfortable , no longer precious and dear

standing in the wake of joy through another passing year

i’m pining for the periods we spent playing amongst the pines

incessantly gasping for air in the thickening atmosphere

reminiscing on the days when the sweetness felt sincere

and slowly slipping from safety , sporadically searching for the signs

as they’re springing out of the corners afar to the crevices near,

our patchwork schemas are left unclear

impeding on the journey we had always hoped we’d find

who woulda thunk reality would be this far from the one we had designed-

as a young child with bright smiles , heart and wit combined ?

i’m pretty certain i’ve peered behind the curtain of the stir in which i was confined-

but even through the weeds , to our hopes and needs , we were so faithfully consigned

so despite the burden of the load we carry in the chasing of the grind ,

the pounds that were lifted from situations that shifted left our character redefined

no matter how admittedly futile or bountifully gained in kind ,

the growth in our journey was willfully sustained , new meaning steadily assigned

And for that , i’d be inclined to say that the kids will be alright .

we may not be as bold and brazen or filled to the brim with delight

there are certainly bonds that shriveled like raisins and left not quite as tight

but i want you to know that throughout it all , during each and every plight

the writing still lives on the wall , even when you’re out of sight .
