I can hear it through the house

A proverbial noise that I thought

I would have grown used to

A clock ticking away against the wall

            Tic

                        Tic

                                    Tic

Adding seconds to the days since

            The hours missed

                        The time spent

A bed lies untouched in an empty room

The only room that knows

When the wind blows

Against the dual-paned windows

            Whoosh

                        Whir

                                    Howl

Echoing against the walls

In a deafening silence

Joined in by the

            Click

                        Click

                                    Click

Of steel-toed boots

On a stained laminate floor

Like the heart in the chest beating

            Bump-bump

                        Bump-bump

                                    Bump-bump

Wound so tight within the covers

Of a blanket gone cold to the touch

But still holding the scent

That he loves and shouts

Into the room

            Where

                        Are

                                    You
