The House Is Too Quiet

Life changes. The quiet remains.

The house is too quiet

With just you and me.

It needs life!

Noise!

Children!

Shall we start a family?

The house is too quiet.

The baby is sleeping.

He’s fine in his crib.

We don’t need to check on him.

Do we?

Maybe one peek….

Shh!

Quiet!

Don’t wake him!

The house is too quiet.

Where’s our Terrible Two?

I just left him for a minute.

Where did he get to?

What is he doing?

How did he get up there?

Do you think he ate any

Of that red crayon

That looks too short now?

The house is too quiet.

He’s off at a sleepover,

Having fun

With his friends.

We have the house to ourselves.

Let’s enjoy the silence.

It’s peaceful…

Isn’t it?

The house is too quiet.

He’s off to college.

Moving him out was noisy:

Banging and crashing,

Doors slamming,

Music blaring,

Laughing and crying

(Or was that just me?)

He’ll be home in no time.

Won’t he?

The house is too quiet.

He’s really on his own now.

New wife, new life.

A house of his own.

Children?

Grandchildren for us?

It’s what we want.

It’s what they want.

Isn’t it?

The house is too quiet.

It was a lovely visit:

Our son,

His wife,

The children,

The dogs,

All that noisy activity!

They’re gone now,

And the house breathes

A sigh of relief.

(Or is that just me?)

The house is too quiet

With just you and me.

The house is too quiet

With just me

And your ghost.

The house is too quiet.
