“They see us as a threat.” Elara’s mind raced. “We need to leave. We can’t let them think we’re here to conquer.” As if sensing her thoughts, the beings hesitated, the energy in the room fluctuating.

Elara took a step forward, raising her hands in a gesture of peace. “We come in peace. We only wish to explore and understand.” For a moment, silence enveloped them.

Then, slowly, the energy receded, and the beings backed away, allowing the crew to retreat. As they hurried back to the shuttle, Elara glanced back at the spire, the mystery of the alien civilization pressing heavily on her.
