The Hidden Codes

I found them in the picture,
Where nobody would look,
A hundred crooked markings,
Like pages from a book.

They twisted through each other,
They crossed and disappeared,
The longer that I watched them,
The stranger they appeared.

I tried to read their meaning,
I followed every line,
One seemed to spell tomorrow,
Another looked like mine.

I copied them on paper,
Then something made me freeze,
The codes began rearranging
As calmly as you please.

One line became a doorway,
One circle formed an eye,
One marking said remember,
But never told me why.

I held it to the window,
I turned it upside down,
And there between the markings
Appeared my little town.

My street was drawn in blackness,
My house was marked in white,
A tiny cross was waiting
Beside my bed that night.

I folded up the paper,
And locked it in a drawer,
But every hidden symbol
Was crawling towards the door.

By morning they’d all vanished,
The paper looked brand new,
Except four little letters
That simply said found you.

So never trust a scribble,
Or lines that make no sense,
Some codes are meant for reading,
And some are best left dense.
