Philip James de Loutherbourg: A Philosopher in a Moonlit Churchyard (1790)

Quietly processed.

***** * *****

I didn’t pay any more mind

(A terrible thing to waste)

To the passing

Than I did the passion.

***** * *****

Quietly processed

With only slight discomfort.

I don't appreciate that,

But I understand its part of

The part where we fall down

From the leaning, crumbling tower.

***** * *****

(We're all a part of a part of a part)

***** * *****

But then, sometimes we can mistake

An intentional descent

For a fall from grace.

***** * *****

I didn’t do all that work

Just to be buried in stone.

***** * *****

Leave the ruins in ruin, I say,

They were no good to me anyway.

***** * *****

I'll return after the scavengers

Have their fill of what remains.

***** * *****

I'll return to sit atop the stone,

To contemplate the fall of empires

Amidst the whirling dust of ages.
