The Haunted Train

The haunted train came through the night.
It showed no sign and gave no light.
I heard the wheels upon the track.
But something told me not to look back.

The empty seats were lined in rows.
A cold wind came beneath the doors.
I heard a voice call out my name.
Then everything just stopped again.

A woman stood beside the door.
I’d never seen her face before.
She wore a dress from years ago.
She smiled at me but didn’t show.

The lights went off and came back on.
I looked around but she had gone.
I heard her footsteps down the train.
Then heard her calling me again.

The driver never spoke a word.
He sat so still it seemed absurd.
I asked him where the train would go.
He simply said, “You’ll soon find out.”

The train went faster through the dark.
I saw no houses and no park.
The windows showed a field of graves.
With little lights beside the names.

The doors flew open at a stop.
There was no station and no shop.
I stayed inside and held my breath.
For something stood outside in black.

The train moved on before the dawn.
The strange old woman had now gone.
But when I looked beside my seat.
Her ticket lay there underneath.
