THE HAUNTED CREEK

Down by the haunted creek,
Where nobody goes,
The water runs slowly,
And nobody knows.

Why mist hugs the water,
Why trees bend so low,
Why footsteps keep following,
Wherever you go.

They say there was a cottage,
That once stood nearby,
Where a woman kept waiting,
And watching the sky.

Her lover went missing,
One cold winter night,
She carried a lantern,
And searched till first light.

They found her shoes waiting,
Beside the old creek,
But never found her body,
Though for years they would seek.

Now sometimes at midnight,
A lantern appears,
Floating above water,
Through hundreds of years.

And somebody whispers,
Come back home to me,
While shadows move strangely,
Beneath every tree.

So stay from that water,
When darkness comes deep,
For something still wanders,
Where haunted things sleep.
