The Hammer

To Save a Republic

The Grant Family Bible is dated 1834 and is covered in worn leather. It is one of my most prized possessions.

IT WILL NOT DO to give out orders

IT WILL NOT DO to shout out commands

Why would they do anything I say?

Unless it is I that shows himself a man

Do not stay still until it is done

There is no peace under the sun

Every day is one day less

One day soon, I will have rest

Refuse the risk and it will never be known

Without action, you will not have a home

Withdraw my hand now; cut the head off a flower:

The world would never know I was a coward

How could they ever listen to a word I say?

How could I even tell them to pray?

Where a day, like men, a shadow and gone

I must rise with the red sun at dawn

The secret of life is to live without fear

Even in prison where most begin to hear

The mission was set like a theater of war

Planned and executed, the day was to be sore

The hammer was taken and I remade

Whatever was earth began to fade

The brass head shattered a grim reality

Nothing but action will save humanity

An hour before I was standing and bloody

Two before that I was fasting and ready

The prisoners gaped at the settling wound

A cheer from a story told all too soon

Of the day I walked in all trim and clean

Of the day I destroyed the tabulation machine

God and courage may save mankind

For the unborn, for the future, to no longer bind

Then I could rest and finally sleep

The best night’s sleep I had in a week

None of its worth it unless you can look in the mirror

The man you are is that much clearer

If you do not believe a word I say

Then the streets, the judges, are supposed to be this way

If you don’t believe your vote is subverted

Then the ones who get re-elected are converted

They simply act according to their gifts

They sell their soul for a name befixed

Look the other way and sing the song

Re-elected for life, the republic is gone

Check and see if these names don’t exist:

Schumer, Feinstein, Inslee, and Biden are some of the list

All excel at two things they do:

Staying elected, staying hated; and you don’t have a clue

How a system champions the best

Elected on character is really the test

By this measure you must affirm

A good man ought to seek one term

Up in the chamber he sees the real mess

Up in the chamber he is not like the rest

There he will not fail to stand upright

There his future will be decided overnight

This is what happens where integrity is inserted

This is what happens when your vote is subverted

Clear out the upstart and the sun shines red

The people, your voice, is as good as dead
