The Girl With the Painted Thumb

A Simple Poem From the Soon-To-Be-Published Book :)

The Girl With The Painted Thumb

I walk through a hall

My hands grip my books

And of all my fingers

Only my left thumb is painted

Why?

Why only the thumb?

The questions drift through

The air and into my ears

I smile to myself

Do not answer why

And I wait for them

To build their own stories

Perhaps I was late for school

My rush was futile

And I only managed one nail

Maybe the rest had chipped

Been picked off of my hands

When I was nervous

Right before a presentation

The more they glance at my hands

The more they ponder

I smile at them

For this is what I had wanted

“How to avoid being portrayed as Ordinary?”

I ask the people

They stutter, do not have an answer

“Get those surrounding you to ask questions.”
