The Girl Who Survived

The small girl who waited

by doors, by windows, by absent calls,

is alive inside me still.

She is not broken.

She is fierce,

she is tender,

she is learning that love

does not have to be given by him

to be real.

She whispers:

You survived. You will survive again.

And I listen.
