My dearly departed, and you living,

Who stand with me here still shiv'ring

On ground dedicated

By blood consecrated

In service to freedom delivering.

Though we wanted to fight without gore

We failed and fought a long war

Now the slaves are all free

And by God may it be

That we'll heal without suf'ring more

Let their unfinished work now sink in

And a new birth of freedom let's seek in

This simple motion

And increased devotion,

To this work of theirs,
