The Game

When all is said and all is done / I am just speeding up this game

If I could perish painlessly,

I trust I would load the gun,

because when their need is my demise,

I still care for everyone —

above my own, selflessly,

is what I have always said.

So if nothing else they wish for me,

then I will grant them me, dead.

Really, is it selfless, though,

when all the world is a stage,

and I am but the spotlight left

when all the cast has gone away?

Is it selfish to wish for death

when I have nothing left?

When all I do is fight and bleed

for that which others are blessed?

Clearly I am not the Chosen One

and of that, I am aware,

and there is a weariness in these bones

from trying to make them care.

Silly me, because I believed

when they said that we are all as One

that that meant we would come together

so that not a single person is undone.

So call me selfish, call me harsh,

take this name I've been given in vain,

because when all is said and all is done,

I am just speeding up this game.
