The Fourth Wall

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

Gerhard Glück (German Artist, born 1944) "Cupid's Break", 2000. Oil on Canvas

I like to wander through the gallery

Admiring things I could not create

To weird nonsense, I have an allergy

But if I understand it, it is great

Rounding a familiar corner one day

I saw something I could not account for:

Freed from a painting, Cupid was at play

I caught him urinating on the floor!

I stood staring at this bizarre display

Wondering how the small god had slipped out

Of an image, to be in a new way

I wrestled with my anxious, puzzled doubt

And then realized that, as far as I know

I am no more real than his little bow

Ekphrastic
