The First Hint

in the stillness of change

The sky has gone white,

and for the first time this season,

the air tastes like winter trying

to settle over autumn.

.

Crisp, frosty crystals,

filmed through water,

frozen onto the last scraps of green.

.

The air remains quiet,

almost as if you can hear

the earth breathe.

.

It’s still,

it’s… calm.

I breathe with it.

.

The cold, minty air meets

the back of my throat as I inhale,

my breath rising in a thin

silver trail as I exhale.

.

Frost gathers over the colors

that struggle to hold on—

the first hint of a season

they weren’t built for.

.

A season I wasn’t ready to meet,

yet it finds a quiet place in me.

.

I let the moment take me,

the way winter takes

the last of autumn.
