The Fire Starter's Wife

An unexpected condemnation

By Justiss GoodePublished 4 months ago • 1 min read

How can I feel sorry for you when I’m too numb right now? The fire starter’s wife is how they’ll know me in town. A truth I can’t seem to wrap my head around.

My mind, nor my body knows exactly how to feel. For me, the whole thing is all too surreal.

It can't really be you. The picture I saw on the news. I recognize your silhouette, your clothes and your shoes. Investigators say they’re undeniable clues.

Now I know the truth, though I try to forget it. I married a fire starter, I hate to admit it.

I feel sorry for you when they punish your deeds. When they follow the evidence wherever it leads. You burned homes and took lives, and you watched and were pleased.

I felt something off and a change in you. Now the reason is clear and I know what to do.

I won’t live with a monster who loves to cause pain. The wife of a fire starter is nothing but shame. If I turn you in then I can stay sane.

When you meet your Maker I feel sorry for you. And this time I really and truly do.
