The Eyes in the Woods

They watch

They watch me every night

The eyes in the woods

glowing like golden embers

They watch

those eyes

slow moving

floating between the trunks of trees

any soul that dare passes by

deceptive eyes

piercing the pitch black night

my own eyes blink

Are those really eyes staring back at me?

The eyes of a cryptid?

The eyes of a local folklore?

Or only the lights of blinking fireflies?

Elusive eyes

that watch me every night

there and gone

like golden embers

fading into the darkness

as my own eyes blink

Even when I cannot see them

I know that they are there

floating between the trunks of trees

watching any soul that dare passes by
