The Edge

Three Steps

By Andrew C McDonaldPublished 4 days ago • Updated a day ago • 1 min read

Frozen footsteps echo through the night,

Each one swallowed by the dying light.

Crimson droplets fall from fingers pale,

Freezing like rubies along the trail.

Her breath hangs still in the midnight air,

A ghostly whisper tangles in my hair.

Beneath her feet, the frozen roses weep,

Their blood-red petals buried six feet deep.

One step closer… the silence screams,

Two steps closer… she enters my dreams.

Three steps… the darkness opens wide,

Her icy fingers beckon from the other side.

Blood drips slowly upon the snow,

Each crimson tear turns to ice below.

Her hollow eyes reflect the moon,

A frozen grave awaits us soon.

The air so cold, the dead earth cries,

As crimson blood begins to crystallize.

Each dripping drop curdles in the frost,

A frozen reminder of souls long lost.

Where death once flowed, now silence lies,

And blood turns black beneath icy skies.

And as the final heartbeat fades,

Two frozen shadows become one shade.

No footprints lead away from the ledge…

Only frozen blood…

And three steps to the edge
