The Drum Beats Out Of Time

Villanelle of regret

By Novel AllenPublished 11 months ago 1 min read

I miss my younger self, walking bold, feet planted firm and strong

I miss my undaunted spirit wind that once blew my soul's steadfast ship

For now my heart and feet play a slower drumbeat to the march of time

~~

We plan, yet life blows our sails in it's own direction, thwarting our goals

I have thundered, roared, loved, fought, won, lost and grieved to the drums

I miss my younger self, walking bold, feet planted firm and strong

~~~
Music which once moved my feet in joyous rhythm, now sings melancholy
Still, I hum it to myself, between wars, strife, chaos and world's uncertainty
For now my heart and feet play a slower drumbeat to the march of time
~~~~

The sails of time catches in my throat, my tears welling up, not spilling over

I swallow it whole. What use is pity, when life still breathes breath. Though

I miss my younger self, walking bold, feet planted firm and strong

~~~~~
Flowers and butterflies may await, lingering in the heart-wood agarwood
My dark perfumed and fragrant essence slowly being harvested by time
For now my heart and feet play a slower drumbeat to the march of time
~~~~~~

I will listen to the wind and trees call each other, moon and sky convulsing

Bending, I retrieve my shadow, sorrow drooping my shoulders, birds silent

I miss my younger self, walking bold, feet planted firm and strong

For now my heart and feet play a slower drumbeat to the march of time
