I walk slowly through the house
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
Is it behind or ahead?
I try a door
It is locked, or jammed, or held?
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
I hurry and find another
It’s held tight shut
The noises get closer to me
The moon is bright
It’s so close I can feel it
And then I wake
But I’m not in that darkened house
I’m in my bed.
My house is small with fewer doors
But when I sleep
Whenever I close my eyes
I’m in that house
And there behind me it is.
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
I dare not sleep or rest my eyes
Followed every night
I know it lies in nightmare lands
Not here not now
Tonight I’ll be there in the dark.
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
And the doors will not open
I fear to sleep
But I fear the doors much much more
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
Because if they do open
Will I wake up?
