The Door That Opened Somewhere Else
In fact it was different every night

The Door That Opened Somewhere Else
A strange inventor built a door,
That never led outside,
He turned the handle carefully,
And stepped through from the side.
He expected just another room,
With furniture and light,
But found himself in someone’s kitchen,
In the middle of the night.
A woman stood beside the sink,
And stared at him in shock,
He said, “I’m sorry, wrong address,”
Then disappeared through the lock.
He tried the door again at home,
And found a railway station there,
A man was reading yesterday’s news,
And floating in the air.
He shut the door and walked away,
But heard a distant knock,
He opened it a little bit,
And saw himself around the clock.
Another version stood outside,
And looked exactly the same,
He whispered, “You built this door as well,”
And called him by his name.
They both stepped back in horror,
And neither dared to speak,
The door began to open wide,
And showed another week.
He finally threw the door away,
Or thought he’d done just that,
But sometimes when he opens doors,
He wonders where he’s at.
