A Ritual

In the mirror

Mouth agape

I seal it shut with tape

Back to the dinner table

Where the words lie on the plate

I poke at them

Grubby grubs

And they scurry off

Echoes

Running from the dam

Back to the mirror

I turn on the tape recorder

Is that my sound

Where once sound came not out?

Are those my words?

Where once I could not shout?

Back to the table

I ring my hands

We are not able to eat

We are not able to speak

My frozen heart sings

Eyes dart over food

Meticulous chop sticks

And your eyes wander

And then a laugh

And then a gusher

And then I wander

Back to the bathroom
