THE DIAMOND THIEF
Stood there at the ball last night,
With the other ladies I danced so grand,
And suddenly I saw a diamond fall,
Right from a pretty lady’s hand.
She never even noticed it,
So I bent and picked it up,
I held it tight until I reached the table,
Then slipped it in my bag.
Within an hour she looked at her hand,
“Oh, my Koh-i-Noor has gone!
Someone has stolen my diamond,
I have a ring with no diamond on!”
Everybody looked around the floor,
With greedy eyes and greedy hands,
Each hoping they would find it first,
And keeping it was in their plans.
I sat there calmly pretending,
There was nothing there to see,
But that little diamond was in my bag,
And now belonged to me.
I waited six long months,
Until it all had died right down,
Then found a buyer of the very best,
From far away in an Indian town.
“Would you like to buy my diamond?
My husband gifted it to me in his will.”
The man looked closely at the stone,
Then smiled and said, “I certainly will.”
“What were you thinking of asking?”
“Oh, just a few thousand grand.”
He looked at me suspiciously,
With the diamond in his hand.
“Are you sure this little diamond,
Didn’t fall from someone’s hand?
We’ve all heard about the woman,
Who lost the famous Koh-i-Noor grand.”
Even though I’d kept it quiet,
They had kept things quiet too,
He’d been waiting for the thief to come,
And he knew just what to do.
Before I could get up to leave,
With my diamond in my bag,
A police officer came rushing in,
And by my hair he gave a drag.
“Get into that car right now,
For you are going straight to jail.
You tried sell the Koh-i-Noor diamond,
Well, that was your biggest fail.”
I sat in prison for fifty years,
Until my whole life had nearly gone,
Then one night my time was up,
But my spirit and my ghost lingered on.
I sit here in my prison cell,
Teasing whoever has got my bed,
They don’t know the fun I had,
Long before I ended up dead.
