you will
wake up
and close your eyes
again
just because you can.
you will wonder
if your heart
is beating
because you barely
feel it,
double check
the locks
for no reason.
twice.
you will
look over
your shoulder
to make sure
the devil
didn’t follow
you home
and take the
black streaks
off your face.
yesterday will sit
on the counter
along with coffee mugs
turned cold
and linger.
you will try
to forget
by doing
normal things
but your body
will remind you
because it will never
go still
and your jaw
will stay clenched.
what if the night
begins when it is over
and you need to live
again?

“yesterday will sit on the counter along with coffee mugs turned cold and linger.” That 👏🏼 is 👏🏼 perfect👏🏼 This was a brilliant poem and deserves a top story!!
Your jaw will stay clenched. Nothing is without consequence.
