THE DAY I LOST MY TEETH

I woke and gave a yawn.
And reached beside my bed.
I looked inside my glass.
My teeth had gone instead.

I searched beneath the sheet.
I searched beneath my chair.
I even checked my slippers.
But they were nowhere there.

I checked inside my drawers.
I checked behind the door.
I crawled beneath my bed.
And searched across the floor.

I blamed the bloody dog.
He looked at me surprised.
He gave a little sneeze.
And slowly closed his eyes.

I asked him where they were.
He wagged his little tail.
I told him this was bad.
My breakfast plans would fail.

I could not eat my toast.
I could not chew my ham.
I pictured lunch arriving.
And me just licking jam.

I searched inside the fridge.
Do not ask me why.
I checked the biscuit tin.
And nearly had a cry.

I rang my closest friend.
And tried to tell her why.
Without my teeth inside.
She could not understand my cry.

She asked if I was drunk.
I told her, course I am not.
She said, then speak more clearly.
That helped me quite a lot.

I searched another hour.
My temper started growing.
I blamed the dog again.
He wondered where this was going.

Then something caught my eye.
Beside my cup of tea.
My teeth were sitting there.
As peaceful as could be.

I stared at them in shock.
Then slowly shook my head.
I knew I put them somewhere.
Before I went to bed.

I popped them in my mouth.
And gave the dog a kiss.
He looked at me as though.
You nearly blamed me for this.

I finally ate my toast.
The dog sat watching me.
I gave him half a slice.
For solving the mystery.

Tomorrow when I wake.
Before I start to shout.
I think I should make sure.
My teeth are really out.
