after all the newspapers were cut

and the book ban at the libraries

while our neighbors were being rounded up

and sent to Guantanamo

we went to see Lady Liberty

wow

once past those security checks

having bought all the tickets

we passed almost the whole day

taking in the view both ways

to one direction rising towers of the rich

on the other not so much

later we meandered some

around the wide base of the thing

and did climb

up to the very top

as if to sing

“Freedom Pop”

when we stood back in line

for the lazy return ride

i had to wonder why this "Lady"

stood on broken chains

and how the ocean breeze

seemed to wet Her sculpted face
