The Comforts of Home
We all have our ways of keeping ourselves entertained outside our front door. But when the world turns dark and unforgiving, nothing can compare to the comforts of home.
Fallen tears of Father Sky fell upon his love
as the ground slowly became a muddy ocean.
All the children of Mother Earth have gathered inside,
each having their share of the blue emotion.
I, myself, have done the same
but with a face beaming with gratitude.
Numerous blankets bundle me in a comfortable squeeze,
tucking me away in perfect solitude.
The air fills the house with potato soup,
forcing the stomachs of the inhabitants to rumble.
The smooth, hot liquid mollifies all satisfied bellies
while the crackers in every mouth start to crumble.
I flip up my laptop and awaken a film
to take me away from the overflowing land.
Whether it be adventures in space, sailing to uncharted worlds,
a misunderstanding in comedic fashion or finding love in one’s hand.
There’s only one thing missing from this gloomy, gray paradise.
Only one way to top this evening with a cherry.
A steaming cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows,
taking me away on a sweet, warm ride on a ferry.
Yes, this day may bring great sadness and despair
to both heaven and to some.
Despite the bleak, cloudy surroundings,
I found its silver lining through the comforts of home.
