The Colour Of Freedom

Composed by Hussain Alshara

My heart is as black as the ashes of my death,

Death of the vibrant life i once held in the palm of my arrogant hands,

For i feel blue, as the waves crash,

And i see red, as blood splashes,

Red is you, and you are red,

As a wandering traveler,

And an ambitious dreamer,

I have felt the warmth of the morning sun gift me with colourful flavours to the eye,

But now the sun does not see me, hiding behind the shade of a familiar oak tree,

One of scars, black and blue,

One of bruises, yellow and purple,

One of blood, rosy red,

One of fears, the nostalgic olive green,

This tree has grown large in stature,

And is no longer green,

It beams over the earth for the world to see,

And brings me great shame

As filthy as the sinking brown mud that stains my feet,

Fueled by the unforgiving retched rain,

My fear is that others will notice me,

Yet this tree overshadows my existence,

However, today i noticed a mighty white blade,

That commanded my attention,

It shared the gold warmth of the sun,

Which beckoned me to approach,

Yet in the midst of hope, i am pulled back by that tree,

A tree that is:

One of scars, black and blue,

One of bruises, yellow and purple,

One of blood, rosy red,

One of fears, the nostalgic olive green,

Like a hound on a leash i am bound to that tree,

So i return, with fiery orange energy, as hot as a burning furnace,

Wide eyed with tears that cry “FREEDOM”,

Free at last,

Free at last,

Free at last,

I grab the blade and roar as my new friend digs into my enemy,

Down goes the giant shadow of my darkest shade of sorrow,

Down goes the fears of yesterday,

Down goes these chains releasing me from my inner enemy,

Thus becoming my inner ally,

A burst of flavours and colourful spices light up the midnight sky,

The white moon gratefully thanks me with its billion stars,

And promises me the sun,

I know it will return and when it does i will smile,

Before my eyes gently carry me to a cosy slumber,

I think to myself;

Free at last.
