Do they know about the colors that made us?

Grass root green is how he came to be a queen.

She was born into a purple body but blossomed

beside the grey gravel of a subway train on E 48th St.

Leila had a rougher start but blazed fire red

when she kicked down signs that didn’t understand.

Rallying together in matching blue tuxedos.

Who cares what they called us when we had one another.

Bold and beautiful was Eliza, in her emerald stilettos.

Leading the way for the misfit toys she called friendships.

I always wondered where I fit into this world of colors.

From the moment we met, whether kids or angsty teenagers.

I never questioned their name, sex or gender.

All I saw were the colors that made them.
